The PS Store is randomly applying a discount to a recently released PS5 exclusive, and only for select users. Team Asobi’s Astro Bot, which only just launched in September, is showing up with a discount on the PS Store for some users. What’s more is that the percentage of discount varies from player to player, ranging between 5% to 25% off.
Is Sony testing personalized PS Store discounts on games?
The PS5 generation has seen Sony make a push towards more personalized offers. We’ve already seen this in case of PS Plus discounts, which are randomly offered with varying percentages.
More recently, we saw Sony implement personalized offers in its PS Stars loyalty program, where campaigns and rewards vary from user to user. In both of the aforementioned cases, players have been unable to establish a pattern.
Over the weekend, I noticed a Reddit thread where a user reported that Astro Bot is 20% off on the PS Store. That’s too soon for a game that crossed 1.5 million sales in nine weeks, I thought. But in response to that thread, a large number of users posted screenshots from their PS5 store and PS App that either showed no discount or a variety of discounts: 5%, 10%, 20%, and 25%. I don’t see any discount on my end either.
Again, there’s no set pattern here except that those who are seeing a discount are mostly based in the U.S. This makes me wonder if Sony is expanding personalized offers to all of its online services.
