It’s been a long road for Nightingale, but it feels like momentum is finally in its favor. The early access survival game landed to a decidedly frosty reception in February 2024, with its beautiful world design marred by underwhelming combat, a lack of direction, and restrictive building caps. Developer Inflexion Games has made a lot of changes since then, however, with the transformative ‘Realms Rebuilt’ update followed by major crafting, customization, and build mode improvements. Most recently, it opened the doors to Nightingale City and another tier of endgame gear options. Now, it invites anyone who might be curious to try the game for free with a limited-time demo and offers a serious discount if you like it.
The arrival of the eponymous city last week feels like a landmark moment for Inflexion Games. The urban landscape was a long-promised zone that had been pushed back in favor of working on more immediate and necessary improvements to the core of the survival game following its decidedly mixed reception. While there’s still a lot to be done, Nightingale Steam reviews tell the story of a game clawing its way back to significance – recent ratings are now ‘mostly positive,’ and even the overall score is just shy of reaching the 70% recommendation ratio needed to escape that dreaded ‘mixed’ tag.
“After much consideration, having first bought the game at early release, playing for 15 hours, stopping, and coming back after a year, I can recommend this game,” one user writes. Another echoes that sentiment: “Originally played when it [was] first released, however after jumping back into it I found myself unable to leave it alone.” There are still plenty of complaints, but the sentiment across the responses feels broadly positive. “Goodness does this game need time to cook, but given the recipe they have it could be great,” reads another review, “I’m happy I have the game but I recognize its flaws.”
We’ve seen plenty of games turn their fortunes around, from No Man’s Sky and Fallout 76 to Final Fantasy 14. Perhaps Nightingale is on its way to eventually joining them. But it can still be hard to commit to buying a game in the middle of making that journey when you’re unsure about its current state. Inflexion is seemingly confident in how far it’s come, however, as it’s now offering a free Steam demo for anyone tempted to check back in.
The Nightingale demo lets you explore right from the start of the game and through Sylvan’s Cradle. You’ll get a taste of the tool crafting system, experience battles against some of its mythical creatures, and have the ability to start constructing a dream sanctuary in the Fae Realms. Any progress you make can be carried over to the full game if you choose to buy it, and a sizable Steam sale price cut means you won’t be breaking the bank to do so.
The Nightingale demo is available free on Steam. The full game is on sale at a 40% discount through Monday March 31, so expect to pay $17.99 / £14.99 if you buy it before then. You can download the demo now, although Inflexion states it will be “available for a limited time only,” so don’t wait around if you’re tempted.
