As part of its push into the video games industry, Netflix has acquired the Oxenfree and Afterparty developer, Night School Studio. “Night School wants to stretch our narrative and design aspirations across distinctive, original games with heart,” Night School Studios’ Sean Krankel said in a statement. “Netflix gives film, TV, and now game makers an unprecedented canvas to create and deliver excellent entertainment to millions of people. Our explorations in narrative gameplay and Netflix’s track record of supporting diverse storytellers was such a natural pairing. It felt like both teams came to this conclusion instinctively.”Krankel says Night School Studio will continue developing Oxenfree II and will also “keep cooking up new game worlds.”This is Netflix’s first studio acquisition since we learned that the company was moving into the video games space. Last month, Netflix began testing mobile gaming on Android with two games, Stranger Things 1984 and the now delisted Stranger Things 3: The Game. The service was first rolled out to users in Poland, but it’s now available for those with a Netflix subscription in Italy and Spain. Netflix’s VP of game development, Mike Verdu, said in a statement that Netflix will “continue working with developers around the world and hiring the best talent in the industry to deliver a great collection of exclusive games designed for every kind of gamer and any level of play.” Verdu also notes that much like Netlflix’s shows and movies, its games will be included as part of your Netflix subscription with “no ads and no in-app purchases.”What do you make of Netflix’s push into the world of video games?
