OverActive Media, the parent company of Spanish esports organisation Movistar KOI, revealed various announcements at last week’s Movistar KOICON event.
The biggest headlines included MAD Lions’ brand officially transitioning to Movistar KOI, an expansion into Fortnite and teases of the LEC heading to Madrid, Spain in April 2025.

In particular, Movistar KOI’s LEC event announcement comes shortly after the EMEA competition announced its intention to pilot bringing competition to fans locally during Spring Split by partnering with teams. Whilst further information about Movistar KOI’s LEC announcement hasn’t been disclosed, last year’s LEC Spring Split took place between March and April.

This year’s Movistar KOICON was held at the Palacios Vistalegre in Madrid with a live audience of 3,000 fans. Overactive Media’s retirement of the MAD Lions brand in favour of Movistar KOI also coincided with the company securing a naming partnership with Telefónica, the parent company of Movistar.
Alongside its new Movistar KOI moniker, which OverActive Media claims is the first LEC team with a naming partner, the organisation has undergone a slight rebranding. The rebranding was first teased in October via a stream by KOI Founder Ibai Llanos.
Under the MAD Lions moniker the organisation became highly successful in League of Legends esports, and over the years, going on to win three splits (2021 Spring, 2021 Summer and 2023 Spring) in the LEC. In 2024, OverActive Media purchased KOI and Movistar Riders, merging them with its existing MAD Lions brand to create a Spanish esports powerhouse.
The announcement of Movistar KOI in the LEC is one of many changes that are occurring in League of Legends’ EMEA ecosystem for 2025. With a revised LEC format, the EMEA ecosystem also includes a major revamp to its tier-two ecosystem.
