Thanks to a new partnership with uBreakiFix, those of you in the US will soon have more ways to fix your Xbox, while the Microsoft Store will also begin selling replacement parts for the latest Xbox Series X|S consoles. The move is part of Microsoft’s initiative to become a zero-waste, carbon-negative, and water-positive company by 2030.Microsoft partners with uBreakiFix for Xbox Series X|S console repairsAsurion’s uBreakiFix will start offering Xbox Series X|S repairs on January 20 in over 700 locations across the USThe Microsoft Store will soon stock replacement Xbox Series X|S componentsMicrosoft plans to eliminate single-use plastics from its packaging in 2025As announced on Xbox Wire, 700 uBreakiFix stores across the US will begin offering repairs for Xbox Series X|S consoles on January 20, with parent company Asurion becoming the first Xbox Authorized Service Provider. In-person repairs were only previously available via the Microsoft Store, so this will be a great move for players who couldn’t access it before. The Microsoft Store will soon stock replacement components for the latest Xbox Series X|S consoles, while the Microsoft Repair Hub on iFixit will also stock replacement console parts. Interestingly, only the three latest Xbox Series X|S consoles have been mentioned: Xbox Series S – 1TB in Robot White, Xbox Series X – 1TB Digital Edition, and Xbox Series X – 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition.Microsoft says that the latest Xbox Series X|S consoles have zero single-use plastics in their packaging, as the company plans to “eliminate single-use plastics from our packaging by 2025,” instead using cardboard and fiber-based materials. Its environmentally-friendly initiatives go beyond physical products, and Microsoft reports that Xbox Series X|S updates over the last three years have improved the consoles’ power consumption. According to Microsoft, features like the energy saving Shutdown setting, and backend improvements to the Series S that have reduced power consumption by around 10% on the console, have contributed to massive energy and emission savings at the company.Microsoft says that between FY20 and FY23 it has “prevented over 1.2 million metric tons of CO2e (Carbon Dioxide equivalent) compared to usage without interventions.” The company says the US EPA estimates suggest it’s the equivalent of more than 2 billion car miles driven by an average gasoline-powered vehicle. Thanks to the Xbox Sustainability Toolkit, developers of some of the best Xbox games have also been “implementing innovative solutions to reduce our environmental impact that preserve the gameplay experiences our players love.” What do you think?
