Michael Conforto gives shockingly candid take on his Mets future

New York Mets outfielder Michael Conforto gave a surprisingly candid response on his future with the team.

Conforto turned around his season in August while the Mets arguably choked away theirs. While New York remains in the playoff race in the NL East, it would be a surprising turnaround were they able to overcome a five-game deficit this late.

The pending free agent slashed .276/.389/.500 in August. It was a far cry from his brutal .197/.324/.325 for most of the season.

It could be just in time for Conforto, who is an unrestricted free agent this offseason. The Mets would prefer to keep him if they can, but it depends on how much Steve Cohen is willing to pony up for his services.

Mets: Michael Conforto’s future uncertain in Queens

Luis Rojas seemingly would like to have Conforto back. The Mets did essentially choose him over George Springer last offseason, so an extension was likely at that time.

“The quality at-bats were more in August. We saw him laying off of more pitches and taking better swings as a whole. Probably result-wise, he wasn’t exactly what you expect out of Michael, but I think he’s really close to being that guy,” Rojas said.

Conforto, though, acknowledged on Tuesday that his future in Queens is very uncertain.

That doesn’t sound like a man intent on staying.

Perhaps Conforto is just realistic. After a disappointing season, despite his productive August, getting a large contract with the Mets isn’t as likely as it once was.
