Winter has descended upon Amazon Games’ hit MMO New World with the Winter Convergence Festival, a limited-time event running from December 16, 2021 to January 11, 2022. Amongst the gift-giving and merriment, a mysterious figure has captured the imagination of Aeternum’s people – the Winter Wanderer.
As snow falls on the land of Aeternum, seasonal festivities have begun in the MMO. New World’s festive event is much more than just a fresh coating of snow, however. There are new quests, activities, items, weapons, and even a fresh helping of lore for fans to enjoy in the Winter Convergence Festival.
New World’s version of the festive season is largely inspired by a mysterious, mythical figure – the Winter Wanderer. His coming is hailed by the Northern Lights in the sky, but is he a benevolent Santa Claus or a sinister Krampus? No one in Aeternum can seem to agree, so naturally, these festive squabbles have escalated into full-blown warfare among New World’s factions. While this might seem antithetical to the spirit of the season, it means plenty of fun for us New World players. After all, the true meaning of the season is loot! Let the war for the Winter Convergence begin.
Say ho ho ho to Yulnir, Father Winter
The First Aspect of the Winter Wanderer is the lovable Father Winter. This kindly figure is said to descend upon Aeternum wrapped in the sky itself, travelling to every home and hearth to provide a bountiful feast on the coldest of nights. Of course, Yulnir only rewards those that have loved and provided for each other over the course of the year, and those who partake in the feast are said to be nourished long into the frigid winter.
To celebrate the coming of Father Winter, some of New World’s settlements have become cosy Winter Villages, adorned with twinkling lights and festive decor. Head to Everfall, Monarch’s Bluff, Weaver’s Fen, or Brightwood to enjoy the seasonal settings and pick up a gift or two from under the tree. While there, seek out the local yeti to begin the seasonal questline, which will lead you on a merry adventure.
In each village, you’ll also find a winter market, where you can exchange gifts for Winter Tokens which can then be taken back to the Winter Wanderer to swap for exclusive items. These items range from Holiday Food to festive decorations for your homestead, all the way to epic weapons and armour – but you’ll have to earn plenty of Event Reputation to earn these higher-tier rewards. You can earn reputation by completing any Winter Convergence activities. Quests will earn you the most rep, but you’ll have to do more than just questing to get to the top rank – keep an eye out for lost presents scattered throughout Aeternum during the event period.
To fully enjoy the festivities, you’ll want to look the part. If you’re stocked up on Marks of Fortune, you’ll be able to cash in for some festive outfits like the Midwinter’s Majesty, the Spirit of the Season, or the Court Couture. You can also give your tools of destruction a little razzle-dazzle with weapon skins like the Yuletide Rod, Jack Frost’s Mitts, or Mistletoe Bow. Outfit your camp in festive style with festive camp skins or bring the holiday home with household items like the Festive Deer Bundle.
Stay out until nightfall during the Winter period and you’ll be able to witness the beautiful natural phenomenon of Gleamites. These dazzling glowing stones fall from the sky like icicles throughout the season, bestowing mysterious power on the people below. Gather up these precious resources and you can exchange them for more Winter Tokens. 10 Gleamite will net you one Winter Token, so gather up as many as you can.
Say no, no, no to Jotunir, Lord Frost
If you’re thinking that all this joviality is a little too much, you’re not alone. The Winter Wanderer’s second aspect, the creepy Lord Frost, also known as the Winter Warrior, is gaining influence in Aeternum and everywhere he walks, darkness follows. This creature of nightmares stalks the shadows looking to devour the hearts and souls of the selfish and vain. He has a legion of loyal “children” – the Frigid Folk – who get up to deadly mischief throughout the season.
These aren’t just campfire stories. They are actually very real, and these minions of darkness seek to envelop all of Aeternum in an eternal winter. As the Frigid Folk’s power has grown, Ice Caves have begun to spring up across the land, housing powerful new enemies and the heavily armed Frigid Folk themselves. If you’re particularly unlucky, you may encounter an Ice Troll, twisted creatures made from souls captured by the Frigid Folk. Take on these powerful foes if you dare and you can earn valuable XP and loot.
