02/01/2025 Marvel Rivals developer NetEase has now confirmed that The Fantastic Four are coming to the PvP shooter, with a first trailer arriving on Monday January 6.
Marvel Rivals has been a tremendous success, swooping onto Steam in true superhero style and proving itself a true challenger to the might of Overwatch from day one. The free game’s first season begins in early January, and now a new image shared from a Chinese app suggests we’ll be getting the full Fantastic Four complement when the update rolls out – and that it could be as soon as next week.
The full roster of Marvel Rivals characters is one of the best parts of the free Steam game. Sure, you’ve got all the favorites, from Spider-Man and Star Lord to Captain America and Iron Man. But Marvel Rivals gives love to more underappreciated members of the comic giant’s catalog. Squirrel Girl and Jeff have been the biggest winners, but we’ve also seen plenty of appreciation for deserving contenders such as Magik, Cloak and Dagger, and Peni Parker.
There have also been a wealth of character leaks popping up in recent weeks, with the likes of Blade and Ultron among potentially on their way to the hero shooter in the near future. However, a new image presented to Chinese users to advertise Marvel Rivals Season 1 suggests that the next update will bring not just one additional hero, but four. The Fantastic Four, in fact.
There’s been enough chatter on the wires around the Human Torch and Mr. Fantastic in particular that it seemed likely they’d be arriving soon enough – but it doesn’t really make sense to favor just one or two of this iconic crew, and so the idea of them all landing together feels right. Previous glimpses suggest that both Reed and Johnny will be duelists, and it seems reasonable to assume The Thing will slot into the vanguard role – so we’ll have to see if the Invisible Woman is a strategist, which would round them out as a perfect team.
The leak also suggests that we could be seeing Season 1 start on Saturday January 11, although given that this post is aimed at Chinese users we’d expect to see it on Friday January 10 for the western audience. Quite how the Four will land on the Marvel Rivals tier list remains to be seen, however – stealth characters such as Sombra in Overwatch, or Teemo and Shaco in League of Legends, can often slip between overpowered and near-useless with the finest stroke of the balancing brush.
Whether they do all arrive on day one or not, we can also look forward to some suitably fantastic new Marvel Rivals skins for the crew. Personally, I’m quietly hoping to see Johnny with that rather bold handlebar moustache he’s been known to favor.
