Colin Farrell didn’t walk around with a limp and a prosthetic face for nothing. In a sign that even a broken clock is right every so often, a few of the best projects from Marvel, DC Studios, and the Dune universe snagged illusive Golden Globe nominations.
In a year where it felt like every day brought a new strange reality to deal with, the weirdos ran TV and film. Both Farrell and Cristina Milioti receive nominations for Best Performance by a Male Actor and Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Limited Series, respectively, for their mesmerizing roles in The Penguin. Without these two taking their talents to depraved depths never seen before in their careers, this show wouldn’t have become the best-ever Batman project without Batman (although Gotham is criminally underrated). Sofia Gigante (Milioti) taking gaslighting to a murderously literal level and Oz Cobb (Farrell) being an overall piece of shit could land DC Studios its biggest win in years.
The hilariously sinister Agatha All Along and the vulgar fourth-wall-breaking Deadpool & Wolverine scored two rare Golden Globe notations for Marvel Studios, as Kathryn Hahn picks up a nomination for Best Performance By A Female Actor In television Series – Musical or Comedy, and the Deadpool 2 sequel gets nominated for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. Honestly, now that a movie can win a Golden Globe for making the most money, Marvel’s wins should start piling up.
For the second time in a row, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune universe has produced Best Motion Picture — Drama and Best Original Score nominations for Dune: Part Two. Unfortunately, Villeneuve wasn’t able to score a second consecutive Best Director — Motion Picture nomination after scoring one for Dune, a fact that will surely anger Josh Brolin into a possible early retirement.
Comic book sociopaths and intergalactic dystopia scored a few noms for the nerds. We’ll see if they can bring home the gold when the 2025 Golden Globes take place January 5 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
