Insta360 has announced a major feature update for its interchangeable lens action camera, the Insta360 ONE R. In addition to new features, the update promises improved performance, new AI-powered editing options, a new remote and more.
The update adds improved stabilization via Horizon Lock for the 4K Mod and 1-inch Mod. Horizon Lock keeps the footage upright and level when shooting in Pro video mode and using FlowState Stabilization at 30fps. Further, 360° Horizon Lock allows users to access horizon leveling for full rotations along a single axis of the camera.

Loop recording is a new function available in the update, allowing for continuous video recording. Previous video footage is deleted to allow new footage to be captured. With any of the available lens mods, the ONE R can be used as a dashcam with a maximum video length of 30 minutes.
Creators can also use loop recording to continuously record footage while waiting for a critical moment to occur. Insta360 offers the example of a surprise party. You set up the ONE R in advance and start recording with loop recording, and then once your friend arrives, and you’ve gotten the shot, you stop recording. Only the preceding minutes of footage will be saved, preventing wasted memory card space.

A new frame rate option of 4K 50fps is available when shooting in Pro video mode while using the 4K Mod and 1-inch Mod. This should be particularly appealing for those who shoot in a 24/25 fps workflow.
The Vivid color profile for the 1-inch Mod has been completely revamped in the new update, promising more vibrant colors straight out of the camera. Further, four different image sharpness options are now available for all ONE R mods.
The update adds a pair of new Shot Lab templates, which are smart editing templates available in the Insta360 app. ‘Horizon Flip’ automatically mirrors your surroundings in the sky. ‘Overtaker’ overlays the number of cars you (safely) pass in a videogame style. Further, users can now apply AquaVision 2.0 to underwater footage. A new algorithm improves colors to make them more vivid and realistic. This is available for all ONE R mods, including the 360 Mod. Speaking of the 360 Mod, when using this mod, users can take advantage of Car MultiView, a new editing feature that shows a split-screen view of the car’s interior and the road ahead, a neat option for recording road trips.

The new ONE R update also aims to improve the overall user experience. TimeShift videos are now automatically sped up to 6x before being saved, reducing the demand for storage. Audio recorded with external mics has been improved. Further, a new Roadie Remote accessory is now available. This is a wireless Bluetooth remote that attaches to your car’s steering wheel for safe control of the camera while driving.
The ONE R update is available through the Insta360 app on iOS and Android and via Insta360’s Studio desktop software on Windows and Mac. The Insta360 ONE X2 will also receive the same updates for Shot Lab, AquaVision 2.0 and Car MultiView.
