Unfortunately for the Minnesota Vikings, tight end Irv Smith Jr. is set to have surgery and he’s going to miss the start of the regular season.

We’ve seen some unfortunate injuries arrive for NFL teams this preseason and you can add the Minnesota Vikings to the list. That’s because stud tight end Irv Smith Jr. is set to miss the start of the regular season.

The standout pass-catcher is scheduled to undergo meniscus surgery. According to Tom Pelissero, the exact timeline for his return is still up in the air, but the Vikings do know that he won’t be available to catch balls from Kirk Cousins come Week 1.

Irv Smith Jr. will underdo meniscus surgery and miss the start of the regular season

Smith is getting ready for his third season in the NFL with the Vikings. The 6-foot-2, 240-pounder played in 13 games last year, hauling in 30 catches for 365 yards and five touchdowns. He’s expected to have a monster year for Minnesota in 2021.

Now, though, fans will have to wait a little longer than anticipated to see him make great plays for the Vikes. It’s up in the air when he’ll be back catching balls from Cousins, but obviously, the sooner the better for the offense as a whole.
