If there’s one thing I’ll always praise Rockstar for, it’s the studio’s undying creativity. Between the western-inspired world of Red Dead Redemption, and its post-war 1947 epic LA Noire (which I contend is the best videogame ever made), Rockstar has consistently showcased its ability to straddle various genres, time periods, and gameplay styles. With John Marston’s debut adventure finally on Steam, a lot of us have been reminded just how good wild west games are, making the news that Neowiz (the creator of Lies of P) is creating a “noir western RPG” even more exciting.
In my Lies of P review, I call it the “best soulslike game since Elden Ring,” praising its Bloodborne-inspired steampunk style, unique storyline, and gorgeous worldbuilding. While a Red Dead Redemption-style western is a far cry from the eerie streets of Krat, if Neowiz and new partner Zakazane can bring Lies of P‘s graphical prowess to their new title, I know for a fact I’ll be obsessed with it.
Based in Poland and comprised of CD Projekt Red and 11bit alumni, Neowiz’s upcoming PC game is the studio’s debut adventure, and is described as a “single-player noir western RPG.” According to Zakazane’s website, you take on the role of this mysterious town’s new sheriff and are confronted with various mysteries that you’ll have to solve.
“The future of the entire community depends on your choices and your definition of justice,” the website says, showcasing what appears to be the game’s sketchy, cartoon-style visuals. That’s all we have at the moment, but it feels like there’ll be a mix of Red Dead Redemption’s western themes, and Baldur’s Gate 3-style decision making. There are, of course, lashings of LA Noire in there as well, with hints that detective work will be at the core of the gameplay. All of that sounds pretty good to me.
We don’t know much about the game – name included – but what I can say is that it sounds like all of Rockstar’s finest blended into one. The art style looks intriguing, the story is unique, and I honestly can’t wait to learn more.
