LG’s new 45-inch OLED gaming monitor has a 5K resolution and it bends

A trio of new LG OLED gaming monitors is set to be announced next week at the CES 2025 trade show, and not only are all of them larger than 39-inch from corner to corner, but one can even bend from flat to a 900mm (900R) radius curve. The Ultragear GX9 45GX990A is the model in question and its 5K resolution will also provide a huge desktop area to match its massive 45-inch screen size.

The three new panels look to be giving LG plenty of firepower to fight for places on our best gaming monitor guide this year, with the company clearly keen to push the limits of screen size, resolution, and shape. The other panels being announced both have a fixed 800R curved, with the the UltraGear 45GX950A also boasting a 45-inch panel and the LG UltraGear 39GX90SA dropping to 39-inches.

Back to the 45GX990A that was revealed on the company’s website and although its full specs haven’t been disclosed quite yet, the new display certainly has plenty going for it. The 21:9 aspect ratio panel provides a superwide view that’s ideal for watching widescreen movies, playing flight sims and racing games, and provides a huge desktop area.

Crucially, that massive screen size is matched by a high 5,120 x 2,160 resolution, rather than using a 3,440 x 1,440 resolution, as is common for a lot of superwide gaming monitors. In our Acer Predator X45 review we found that 45-inch panel looked amazing in racing and flight sims but its lower resolution wasn’t great for other tasks. This new LG should fix that issue, though you’ll still have to move your head around a lot to see the full expanse of such a huge screen.

LG hasn’t revealed what the refresh rate of the panel will be yet but has let on that it will include Dual-Mode. That’s the ability of the panel to change between a higher resolution with a lower refresh rate and a lower resolution with a faster refresh rate. We just recently reviewed the 32-inch 32GS95UE that features Dual-Mode, and its ability to switch between a 4K resolution with a 240Hz refresh rate and a blazing-fast 480Hz refresh rate at 1080p was so compelling we currently consider it the best overall gaming monitor you can buy. You can read more about why it’s so good in our LG Ultragear 32GS95UE review. If LG’s newest model can at all match that excellence, it will be quite something.

As for that bendability, we’ve seen such a feature before with the likes of the Corsair Xeneon Flex. It seemed like a bit of a gimmick at the time, and still largely feels a bit unnecessary. However, the advantage is that the curve can allow you a more immersive single-user experience up close, while flattening the panel gets you a view that’s better for multiple viewers.

As for the UltraGear 45GX950A, this panel offers the same panel size and resolution but its curve is fixed at a tighter 800R radius. LG also points out its RGWB sub-pixel layout should improve on text readability compared to previous LG OLEDs. Read our LG Ultragear 27GR92QE review to learn why that’s so important.

LG notes this panel includes Dual-Mode functionality with eight customizable configurations, plus it supports DisplayPort 2.1, HDMI 2.1 and USB-C with 90W power delivery. The panel also includes support for AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and Nvidia G-Sync. Notably, LG doesn’t list these features as being on the 45GX990A but we would assume it also includes them, given it’s the flagship model.

As for the 39GX90SA, it’s also a 21:9 aspect ratio panel but in a slightly smaller 39-inch size. LG doesn’t specify its resolution but notes it includes LG’s webOS interface with inbuilt streaming services and that its 800R curved panel “produces brilliant, nuanced colors and deep, dark blacks, making it perfect for AAA games and HDR movies and series.” It also includes USB Type-C video ports for convenient laptop connection and has a “space-saving L-shaped stand for a clutter-free desk setup.”

As OLED panels, all these displays will have ultra-fast response times, with the 45GX990A listed as having a 0.03ms response time. As such, assuming the panels come with refresh rates that exceed 120Hz, they should provide a super-slick gaming experience.

We’ll hear more about the new displays when they’re given a full unveiling at CES, where we’ll be reporting from the show floor. You can check our CES story hub to see all the latest as it comes in.
