There’s been a flurry of Lenovo Legion Go related leaks and rumors recently, some of which have suggested the company could be ditching the original Legion Go’s unique detachable controller design. However, a new leak has firmly suggested that a true Lenovo Legion Go 2 is in the works, which will upgrade just about every aspect of the original handheld, including adding an OLED screen and a new AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor.

As one of the top three best handheld gaming PC options available, the original Lenovo Legion Go has long stood out for its incredibly versatile detachable controller design, as we explored in our full Lenovo Legion Go review. However, its size and high price, along with a slew of other recent rumors pointing towards a new smaller unibody Lenovo Legion Go S design, have led many to wonder if Lenovo would continue with its original approach. Thankfully, it appears Lenovo has stuck to its guns.

The new Legion Go 2 leak comes from regular tech leaker, Evan Blass, who shared pictures with tech site The Verge, which show the apparent new Lenovo handheld. From these pictures, we can clearly see several key aspects of the updated design, plus The Verge reveals that the names of some files hint at the new device switching from an LCD to an OLED panel.

The most obvious aspect of the Lenovo Legion 2 revealed by these images is the continued use of the detachable controllers. This was largely the most celebrated aspect of the original design, with it allowing a far more versatile range of uses than a fixed in-the-hand design.

What’s more, the images show that Lenovo appears to be keeping the ability of one controller to function as a mouse – what Lenovo calls its FPS mode – by dropping the controller into a circular sliding mount. The built-in kickstand on the tablet section is also clearly visible, showing how you can prop up the handheld for easy gaming from a distance.

These photos also suggest that the screen will remain a similar or slightly larger size to the 8.8-inch original, with it filling just a little more of the device when the two are scaled to the same size, as shown in the image below. This comparison also demonstrates how rounder and more ergonomic the new design appears. The original design was distinctly boxy so the new model should be more comfortable to hold.

The button layout has changed slightly too, with the right joystick moving slightly lower and the touchpad actually shrinking in size. The left D-pad has also switched from a four-way cross to an eight-way design.

What’s also notable about the buttons is that, unlike the Lenovo Legion Go S, this device doesn’t appear to have a SteamOS button. That suggests we could see Lenovo sticking to Windows for its higher-end devices while providing a lower-cost direct Steam Deck competitor powered by SteamOS for its cheaper options.

Meanwhile, this leak doesn’t reveal anything about the chip that could be powering the new handheld, but previous rumors have pointed to it being the upcoming AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme that’s expected to be revealed at CES 2025, alongside the company’s new range of RX 8000 GPUs, such as the Radeon RX 8800 XT. This new chip is expected to seriously up its graphics power compared to the Legion Go’s Z1 Extreme chip.

Not that the Legion Go isn’t already decently powerful, and with it now discounted to just $499, down from its original $799 launch price, it remains a tempting option.
