Legends of Libra is a surprisingly engaging midcore, one-finger shooter that sees you blasting your way through waves of enemies, unlocking new talents and powering yourself up to take down bigger enemies. There are rogue-very-lite elements, and a decent punch that keeps you dropping back in for more.
You control your soldier with a single finger, dragging a joystick around to move. Stop moving and you’ll start shooting. There’s a neat special power system too – you move to power it up and once the bar is full, when you stop you’ll unleash it.
The levels are split into different rooms. You need to kill everything in a room to move on to the next. You can’t collect any of the gold or other goodies that slain enemies drop until you’ve cleared a room. As you fight you’ll earn XP, which you can exchange for new perks.
You get a choice of three perks at every level-up. They range from special bullets to increased fire rate and health-leeching powers. They’re wiped at the end of every level, so you need to build yourself up again when you take on the next challenge.
There are weapons and gear that you can equip as well. You’ll apply these at the start of a run, giving you more firepower and health. You can use the blueprints you find to increase the power of your equipment as well.
Different enemies have different strategies – some rush at you, some fire poison and then dig underground to avoid your fire. There are big bosses as well, with huge health bars and patterns that you need to learn if you want to survive.
There might not be much meat on Legends of Libra’s bones, but it’s a neat and engaging blaster that you can dip in and out of when you’ve got a hankering for some carnage. The energy system isn’t great, but the shooting just about manages to make up for it.
