The Kansas Jayhawks are heading to the Elite Eight following their win over the Providence Friars. They made history in the process.

The Kansas Jayhawks were the only No. 1 seed remaining in the NCAA Tournament after both Gonzaga and Arizona lost on Thursday night. To avoid three top-seeded teams getting eliminated in the same round, the Jayhawks would have to defeat the No. 4 Providence Friars.

Kansas defeated Providence 66-61 to advance to the Elite Eight and made history in the process. That was the Jayhawks’ 2,534th all-time win, which is the most victories in Division I history.

That will certainly make Jayhawks fans a lot happier as they celebrate on their Friday evening. Not so much for Providence, who fell just short of reaching the Elite Eight for the first time since 1997.

The Jayhawks had to hold off the Friars in the second half. Providence, who only scored 17 points in the first half, emerged from the locker rooms and dropped 44. Yet, it was not enough, as Kansas held them off with 40 points in the final 20 minutes of regulation.

Kansas had a tremendous performance from senior guard Remy Martin, who scored 23 points (7-for-13 from field, 8-for-13 on free throws) and grabbed seven rebounds coming off the bench. Sophomore forward Jalen Wilson recorded a double-double by scoring 16 points and hauling in 11 rebounds.

The Jayhawks will now face the winner of No. 10 Miami (Fla.) and No. 11 Iowa State for their chance to make it to the Final Four for the first time since 2018.
