The striking and ground game of Jose Aldo are still top-notch, as he makes fairly easy work of Rob Font at UFC Vegas 44

Former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo is still going strong and continues to be a significant name at bantamweight, as he dominated Rob Font in a unanimous decision in the UFC Vegas 44 main event.

Aldo has now won three straight since losing a bantamweight title fight to Petr Yan, also scoring wins over Marlon Vera and Pedro Munhoz over the past year. But this win over Font seemed to be Aldo’s best performance since his move down to 135.

And now with the win, Aldo aims for a fight with T.J. Dillashaw in a No. 1 contender’s fight that would serve as a dream fight for many MMA fans.

“Of course I want to fight for the belt, but the Dillashaw fight is right there. I want Dillashaw,” Aldo said in his post-fight Octagon interview.

Font touched Aldo up in the first round, constantly pressing Aldo, who only had single-digit strikes for most of the opening frame, back up. But Aldo rocked Font with a right hand in the closing seconds before dropping him with a follow-up one-two and getting on top of him.

Aldo rocked Font hard again early in the second round with another right hand. Font, however, fought back, firing off combinations and trying to keep the pressure up. But Aldo simply looked crisp and sharp in his striking.

Font attempted a takedown on Aldo in the third round, but Aldo avoided it and stayed in top position for a couple of minutes. Aldo’s striking continued to be on point, though Font’s hands resulted in significant swelling around Aldo’s right eye,

Aldo exploded to start round four, rocking and taking Font down. Aldo then completely dominated on the ground in the top position.

Aldo seemed to coast at the start of round five, with Font working Aldo over against the cage. But Aldo’s striking was still there, rocking and dropping Font once more.

Two judges gave the fight to Aldo 50-45, with one scoring it 49-46 in his favor.
