Jhony Corza is getting the chance to live out a dream and join the WSL Championship Tour in his home country of Mexico.
The World Surf League is heading out to their next event location, a location that has not been included in the tour since 2006. That place in Barra de la Cruz Mexico. This beautiful right-hand point break will put the best surfers in the world against each other as the year starts to wind down and final spots are starting to fill up. One local surfer will be joining the fight in the water, Jhony Corza is taking the wild card spot and hoping to turn heads in the process.
“It was like my dream since I started surfing,” Corza told FanSided. “It’s like the big goal, it’s what I want to finally get to be in this event especially at home and it feels even better being hosted at home with my country and my people and a lot of support on the beach. So yeah, I’m super happy to have the opportunity to represent the country.”
When Mexico was added back into the lineup for the tour, many surfers were thrilled. It is a fun place to surf and although it may be unfamiliar to many, it brings a new challenge. Adding Barra de la Cruz back in is also great for the Mexican surfing community. Corza has grown up surfing this wave and he knows what it means to have a WSL event in his home community.
“It helps a lot for the upcoming groms, for the new generations,” Corza said. “I think this is what we need in Mexico, you know, more of these upcoming events. This high-level contest I think it helps a lot to bring out the talent quicker seeing all these guys surfing really good, it makes you surf better and I think it’s great.”
Corza is currently competing on the Challenger Series, a series of events geared to promote up and coming surfers as a way to qualify for the championship tour. Corza wants to earn his spot on the CT permanently and is hoping to do so with these kinds of wild card opportunities and participating in the U.S Open later this year.
