Sony Interactive Entertainment is in a new era, not just because there’s a new leader after Jim Ryan’s departure, because there are two new leaders.A new structure to the business has officially kicked off with Herman Hulst and Hideaki Nishino taking the reigns as joint-chief executive officers, each of them in charge of a different branch of SIE.Hulst will lead up PlayStation Studios as the leader of the newly defined Studios Business Group, while Nishino is heading up the newly defined Platform Business Group. On Monday, the leaders spoke together to the public for this first time officially in their new roles in a statement on the official SIE website. In the statement the new leaders talk about the “exciting new future” that SIE has and how they see their own role in that as leaders, saying they believe “it’s never been more important for the leadership at SIE to step back.”“We believe it’s never been more important for the leadership at SIE to step back, review our business holistically, and move forward with a new structure designed to bring out the best in the organization and deliver increasingly incredible experiences,” they said in the statement.Or at least, that’s what it looks like they said. After the whole debacle that was Neil Druckmann’s fake interview, it’s difficult to trust these statements again, if it wasn’t already difficult to trust. That might be part of the reason Hulst and Nishino also included an email they sent internally to all SIE staff below the statement on the website. There, they add,“As we step into our new roles, we will take time to deepen our understanding about various aspects of the business. In the coming weeks you will receive information about a future Town Hall, and moving forward, we plan to communicate with you regularly. This is a truly exciting time with great opportunities to expand the boundaries of play. This new structure will let us continue our journey as trailblazers in the entertainment industry which has always been fueled by our passionate workforce.Together as one organization, we will continue to harness that passion to bring amazing innovative experiences to our expanding community.”It was only as of June 1 that Hulst and Nishino officially stepped into their new roles, so we still need to wait and see how things go, and what it might mean for them to “step back” and take a broader look at the business.Hopefully it doesn’t mean more layoffs and shuttering studios that were core to PlayStation’s culture, as we’ve seen the company do the last few years.Source – [Sony Interactive Entertainment]
