Brent Primus met Islam Mamedov at Bellator 263.
Who would break first, the man who hasn’t lost a fight since 2009 in Islam Mamedov or Brent Primus, a homegrown Bellator fighter who has only lost once in his career, dropping the Bellator lightweight championship back to the man he defeated for it in Michael Chandler. That was the question to ask at Bellator 263. For Mamedov, it wasn’t him, and his unbeaten streak continues on. The fight was close, with John McCarthy giving the fight to Primus but he’s not a judge so that ultimately didn’t matter.
A big win for Islam Mamedov and a tough loss for Brent Primus
While Primus defeated Chandler due to an injury the then-champion sustained, Primus still got the win and the championship, so a win over Primus is a good thing for Mamedov. How many people can say they defeated a Bellator world champion? For Primus, this fight hurt largely due to the inactivity he’s been dealing with over the years. McCarthy pointed that out on commentary, and also said that Primus wants to fight three times this year. With two apparent cards on the table for Primus, he can’t afford to drop anymore if he wants to get back into the title scene at his age. Most men aren’t making runs for titles at 36-years-old.
