Hugely anticipated new RPG Hyper Light Breaker is struggling on Steam

After nine years, Hyper Light Breaker has arrived, but not all players are getting to enjoy the long-awaited roguelike. Niggling performance problems are hampering what should be a momentous occasion for devs and fans alike, but a fix is already on the way.

Hyper Light Breaker arrived on Steam Early Access this January as one of the most promising roguelikes of the year. Developer Heart Machine’s previous two releases, Hyper Light Drifter and Solar Ash, are among the finest in the genre, and the expectation was that Breaker would carry on that standard.

The RPG has a lot going for it mechanically, but players are having trouble getting it to run smoothly. Reviews are mixed at Steam at time of writing, and they speak of stuttering and lag that only increases during combat, as well as a lack of options for graphical settings among other problems.

Heart Machine is working on it though. “We know players have faced some performance issues and we are working on a fix to that and other reported issues coming this week,” the developer writes on X/Twitter. “Stay tuned for more info.”

When we’ll start seeing these updates isn’t mentioned, but it sounds like it’s top priority for the team. Some of this will be part of the launch rollout anyway, as there are always issues that emerge when making something publicly playable. Being Early Access factors into that as well – remember, this new game is a work-in-progress right now.

With any luck, Hyper Light Breaker will be running smoothly for anyone who wishes to boot up. Have a look at our list of the best fantasy games for other awesome worlds to explore, and our upcoming games list for more releases to be mindful of.
