A huge modding project within Grand Theft Auto 5 has allegedly been shut down after discussions with Rockstar. According to a post from a member of the mod’s team, the decision to end the Liberty City Preservation Project was made following an apparent meeting with the developer and publisher.

The Liberty City Preservation Project was an attempt to bring GTA 4 into GTA 5, bringing the older open-world game into the current installment so more players can more easily access and appreciate it. The modification was a large undertaking by team World Travel, and sadly it appears to be no more, according to a post on their Discord.

“Due to the unexpected attention that our project received and after speaking with Rockstar Games, we have decided to take down the Liberty City Preservation project,” user nkjellman states. “We appreciate all the support the project has received, and we look forward to continuing to pursue our passion for modding the Grand Theft Auto series.”

The LCPP received considerable fanfare towards the end of 2024 from players who were very impressed by World Travel’s work. A lot of development went into the city’s innerworkings and ambiances, giving it more functional public transport and improved background noise so it feels as vibrant as everything else in Grand Theft Auto 5.

Such a response can lead to unwanted attention from publishers, and it appears that might be what happened here. The above announcement is the extent of what’s been publicly stated on Discord so far. No further explanation has been provided by World Travel and no official word has come from Rockstar on the matter.
