How To Play Grace – A Beginner’s Guide
Now, the info.
The Basics
Grace is at it’s heart a speedrunning game. You have a level to navigate made up of long, dark corridors full of obstacles and monsters. After the first level, you also have a time limit to complete the level. You need to traverse the hallways as fast as possible, while avoiding the… interesting residents that live there.
Controls
First, you need to master the controls. For keyboard users, the important keybinds are as follows.
- WASD – Move
- Space – Jump
- 1-9 – Hold hotbar item.
- E – Interact
- Shift/M2 – Run
- CTRL/C – Crouch
- Crouch + Run – Slide
Mastering the slide can take a bit of getting used to, but it’s vitally important in how to play Grace. Slides are used to kick open jammed doors, which is essential to progress, and you’ll need to learn how to do it quickly and smoothly.
The areas in Grace are very dark, so make sure to select either your flashlight or lantern from your hotbar so you can see more than a foot in front of you.
Obstacles
The object of Grace is to reach the end of a level and the manhole that drops you into the next saferoom before the timer runs out. There are a few relatively mundane things that get in your way before you even get to the spooky stuff, so let’s talk about those.
Low/High Terrain
Sometimes the path will require you to jump or crouch to progress.
Regular Doors
There you need to open by interacting with them using the E key. You cannot open these by sliding.
Jammed Doors
These you need to open by sliding into them. Look out for the wood sign on them from a distance and prepare to slide.
Locked Doors
These metal shutters can’t be opened or kicked. You’ll need to activate three switches in the room to open them.
Entities
Sounds easy so far? Unfortunately for you, you’re not alone down there. Nasty things lurk in the dark, and if you want to learn how to play Grace you’ll need to learn how to deal with them if you want to survive. Each entity has a strategy for tackling them. Learn their tells, and the way to handle them, and you might make it past. Let’s go into them all briefly.
Carnation
A flash of pink static and pink tendrils around your vision signal this entity’s imminent arrival. Carnation is a flowery creature that speed along the corridors and sweeps up anyone who happens to be in the way. When you know it’s coming you need to look for a crawlspace that splits off the main path and get inside before it gets to your location. After it passes, you’re safe to continue.
Slight
Blue light in a room ahead warns the presence of Slight, an eye-like entity that hates being watched. If you make eye contact (and Slight is all eye.) then the entity will rush towards you. Getting hit once adds visual distortions to your screen that stay for the whole run. Getting hit a second time is the end of the line. Avoid looking at Slight to pass through the room alive.
Slugfish
White tentacles on the screen signal Slugfish is coming. This one is less complicated than Carnation, but the idea is similar. Slugfish hurtles along the hall at speed, taking everything it its path. Unlike Carnation, Slugfish is a bit more compact, just step back against the wall and give it enough room to get past and you’ll survive.
Elkman
Elkman is a huge, shadowy figure than appears in rooms, emitting light from its head. If you see Elkman in a room, step back and hide behind a wall and he should disappear. Don’t get into the light, because it can kill you if you stand in it too long.
Heed
A red eye-like entity. This cousin of Slight requires the opposite tactic. Think Weeping Angels. Don’t let the Heed out of your sight until you leave the room. This can be a bit tricky, as it means having to open a door with your back to it, even trickier if it’s jammed. Both of these things are possible, though.
Dozer
Bow before Dozer. You’ll know this entity it near when a yellow face pops up on your screen. That’s your cue to crouch, stay crouched, and not move until the face disappears. That’s all you need to do… though that’s sometimes easier said than done with the timer counting down.
Sorrow
If a room’s air becomes red, it’s time to hide. Sorrow pelts the ground with projectiles. Find shelter as soon as possible to avoid a grim fate, and wait for the fatal weather to pass.
Goatman
Wondering why you don’t want to run out of time in levels? It’s because doing so releases the Goatman. There’s no way to stop this thing. You just need to make a run for the exit and hope you get there before he catches up with you. A flashlight might make him pause for a second, but focus on escaping.
