You might have wondered it once or twice when you stop for fuel and debate over how much money to spend. Could you just stock up on coal and take it the whole way? No need to save up dozens of zombie bodies to keep the furnace running. Would it be prohibitively expensive to do it? We decided to investigate this properly and find out: How many coal do you need to finish Dead Rails?
Dead Rails is free to play on Roblox. If you’re curious about other recent content for the game, maybe take a look at our Dead Rails update guide.
How Many Coal Do You Need To Finish Dead Rails?
First, we’ll explain the theory we came up with, then we’ll go over how it worked out in a test run.
The Numbers
We decided to look at the numbers. First, we tested how far the train can get on one piece of coal. This can vary a little in the tests depending on game physics, but it worked out at around 3970m for one piece of coal. Then we divided that by the number of metres, 80,000.
So, according to the math:
You need 21 pieces of coal to finish Dead Rails.
21 pieces of coal will set you back $420. We were able to purchase enough coal to make the entire distance from around one lucky town raid and bank vault.
The Test
Now, that’s all well and good in theory, but does it work out according to the numbers in-game? We tested our theory with the following conditions.
- Default Train (Not the Armored Train.)
- One player.
- Miner class for the two starting coal, and the ability to break rocks along the route easily.
- No other fuel.
- No Conductor.
- Minimal looting stops, only to acquire money for more fuel.
- Coal counted out ahead of time.
In these conditions, our test run reached the bridge fort after using 21 pieces of coal to fuel the train, with a little bit of fuel still left in the train.
