The San Diego Padres, who seemingly won the trade deadline, were eagerly awaiting the return of shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., who was recovering from a fractured left wrist. With a return near, the bombshell news dropped that he would be suspended for 80-games after he tested positive for the performance-enhancing substance, Clostebol.
There is now some incoming news regarding Tatis.
According to FanSided MLB insider Robert Murray, Tatis is set to undergo surgery to repair a shoulder injury.
With surgery on the horizon, fans are wondering how this affects the shortstop’s current suspension.
How does surgery affect Fernando Tatis Jr’s suspension?
Since Tatis is undergoing surgery, that does not mean that his suspension is on hold.
At the time of the suspension announcement, it was revealed that his suspension was effective immediately, and would continue for the next 80 games that the Padres played, postseason games included. The games remaining on the suspension would carry over into the 2023 season. Tatis was placed on the restricted list for the remainder of the 2022 season.
Shoulder injuries are not new for Tatis. In the 2021 season, Tatis suffered partial dislocations of his left shoulder at least four times and spent two trips on the injured list. He opted against undergoing surgery for the injury.
Tatis had not played a game in the 2022 campaign, as he suffered a fractured left wrist in a motorcycle accident. But, he was getting ever so close to making his return from the injured list after the trade deadline to help the San Diego super team make a push for the postseason.
After his suspension was announced, Tatis said that the
Padres fans, you can still expect Tatis to return at some point in the 2023 season.
