League of Legends Season One 2025 is about to start, marking the beginning of a new era with a reworked Ranked structure, a transformed Rift map, and changes to Teleport. But even before launch, the new LoL patch has already been criticized by one of the game’s most prominent streamers and creators, Los Ratones coach Marc Robert ‘Caedrel’ Lamont. Calling the new patch “horrible,” Caedrel says that the changes to TP lean too heavily on influences from LoL’s spin-off TV series Arcane, and that various aspects of the new patch feel like they cater to players coming to League of Legends for the first time after watching the show, rather than long-time fans of Riot’s MOBA.
The new League of Legends patch makes some sweeping changes. The Rift has been transformed by the Noxian invasion, and is now inhabited by a new epic monster, Atakahn. The biggest rework however is to Teleport, which now works slower, and physically moves the player across the map rather than transporting them instantly. Early teleportation in the MOBA now has a long travel time, similar to how Hextech works in Arcane. Sampling the new patch, Caedrel says that the changes to TP are “fucking horrible.”
“The new TP change is fucking horrible,” Caedrel says during a Monday January 6 stream. “I hate it. I feel like it’s forced for Arcane. I feel like this whole TP change is forced just for the TV show.”
Caedrel’s criticisms speak to a broader concern in the LoL community, that the game is being changed to suit newly arriving players who have watched Arcane, and to fit the lore and ‘mechanics’ of the show. A recent report from Bloomberg claimed that, despite earning large audiences on Netflix, Arcane failed to attract a significant number of new League of Legends players. For some long-serving LoL fans, there may be concern that the game is being changed to cater to a playerbase that still doesn’t exist.
“Of course they’re catering to an Arcane audience because they’re coming from the show to play the game,” Caedrel continues. “You can buff all the Arcane heroes, sure, but this Hexgate TP shit is so stupid. The new map skin and the way the map looks is fucking horrendous. The tower just looks stupid. You should be able to turn it off. The map looks bad and the TP is annoying.”
Our resident LoL expert Lauren rates Caedrel’s team Los Ratones as the “most exciting thing to happen to League of Legends esports in years.” Now, with the new Ranked season arriving on Thursday January 9, make sure you check the latest LoL tier list, and also find out which League of Legends skins are currently on sale.
