Hero Squad is a top-down shooter that sees you building a team of gun-toting soldiers and trying to blast as many enemies in the face as you can. Kill everyone on a level and you’ll leap into a chopper and fly off to the next challenge. It’s a pretty entertaining experience, but it can get tough in some places if you’re not on your toes.

And since we like keeping you on your toes, we’ve written this guide. It’s formed of all of the hints, tips and tricks we’ve discovered while playing Hero Squad. Follow these strategies and in no time flat you’re going to have the most heroic squad of murderers the world has ever known.

Whether you’re just starting building a squad or you’ve already been taken down by waves of red foes multiple times, there’s going to be something here to help you out. That’s because these are the best hints, tips and cheats for Hero Squad.

Keep your distance

It’s a really bad idea to rush straight at the enemies and try to take them down in close quarters. Instead, once you’ve engaged them, back off and let them come to you. If you can find a choke point to lead them through that’s a great idea too. Keep your distance and you’ll be able to take down most hordes before they get close enough to hurt you.

Get out of the red circles

When you see a red circle around your team, it’s time to move. These circles fill in over a short amount of time and when they’re full a grenade will land and deal massive damage. As soon as you see a red circle on the floor, move away from it to a safer position. The less damage you take, the better you’re going to do.

Keep an eye out for chests

Chests are filled with boosts, coins and gems, all of which are going to come in very handy, as well as keys that unlock bonus levels. It’s sometimes easy to miss them and get on the helicopter without collecting their bounty. Always have a sweep of the level to make sure you haven’t missed a chest.

Pick varied allies

A grenade soldier is always a good first choice, since their AoE attacks can damage multiple enemies at once. But after that you should start taking a varied cohort of allies. The more skills you have at your disposal, the easier it’ll be to take down the attackers. Remember to upgrade your units when you’ve unlocked enough cards as well.

Make sure you get all the coins

While the coins will fly towards you if you’re close enough, it’s easy to miss some if you don’t go back and check. When you’ve killed a chunk of bad guys, have a quick wander around to make sure you’ve got as much gold as you can. You’ll be surprised how quickly those stray coins can add up.
