There are an awful lot of free games floating around there right now, from Epic’s weekly freebies to publisher promos on Steam, GOG sale giveaways, and more. Keeping track of them all can be tough, and you might be missing out.
That is not an acceptable state of affairs, so we’ve put together this running list of every free game that crosses our screens. The goal is to help you find and claim games that usually cost money, so free-to-keep and temporary promotions will be included and noted as such, but free-to-play games and others that are normally free won’t be—for that, be sure to take a look at our categorized breakdown of the best free PC games.
Now let’s get started:
Time-limited:
- Battlefield 1 – It’s free for Amazon Prime subscribers right now, but non-Prime people can play EA’s faux-First World War shooter at zero cost too thanks to a free weekend on Steam. And if you like what you see it’s on sale too, for just $5. (Steam, ends July 25)
- Galahad 3093 – The high-speed, Hawken-styled multiplayer mech game is kicking off another round of beta testing on July 23. The latest playtest session will include two new maps (for a total of five) and other updates and enhancements. (Steam, ends August 1)
Free to keep:
- Defense Grid: The Awakening – A deep tower defense game with 15 enemy types, 20 environments, and a 90% review from PC Gamer. An oldie (it came out in 2008) but definitely a goodie. (Epic Games Store, ends July 29)
- Verdun – A multiplayer FPS set in the horrific trenches of the First World War, Verdun features accurately modeled weapons, multiple game modes, 15 squad types from five countries, and support for up to 64 players in large-scale battles with dynamic frontlines. (Epic Games Store, ends July 29)
Prime Gaming:
The games on Prime Gaming aren’t technically free, since you need to be a subscriber in order to take advantage. But there’s a lot on offer if you are, including in-game loot and starter packs for free-to-play games, so it’s worth keeping tabs on. Prime Gaming is included with Amazon Prime at $13 per month, or $120 per year; links to all included freebies are available at amazon.com.
- Portal Dogs – As king of the dogs, your mission is to find all your loyal subjects and guide them to the portal. Every dog you wake will automatically follow your movements, but the job’s not done until all your subjects are free and you’ve found the mythical Golden Bone. (ends August 2)
- RAD – RAD is a 3D action rogue-like set in a post-post-apocalyptic world, where humanity has faced armageddon not once, but twice. (ends August 2)
- The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition – A faithful recreation of the famed LucasArts adventure, with re-mastered musical score, full voiceover, and an in-depth hint system, and the ability to switch seamlessly between the reimagined update and the original classic. (ends August 2)
- Automachef – A resource management puzzler where you design kitchens, program machinery and watch your genius come to life! Engineer tomorrow’s kitchen, today. (ends August 2)
- Batman: The Enemy Within – Guide the fates of Gotham City and the Batman in Telltale’s take on the Caped Crusader. (ends August 2)
- The Wanderer: Frankenstein’s Creature – Play as the Creature, a wanderer without memory or past, a virgin spirit in a completely fabricated body. To forge the destiny of this artificial being who is ignorant of both Good and Evil, you will have to explore the vast world and experience joy and sorrow. (ends August 2)
- Tales of the Neon Sea – Dive into a world of intrigue and suspicion where humans and robots contend with escalating tensions and mutual distrust and where gangster felines scheme their way to the top of the food chain. (ends August 2)
- Battlefield 1 – Jump into a frenetic take on WW1 combat in EA’s hit 2016 shooter. Battlefield V, a similar twist on the Second World War, will be added to the lineup in August. (ends August 4)
We’ll keep this list as comprehensive as we can, but if you spot something we haven’t, let us know in the comments.
