Following in the footsteps of Starship Troopers and its 2015 prequel, Helldivers 2 puts you in control of the titular, freedom-loving Helldivers as they wage war against their insectoid foes across the galaxy. Since its release in February, it’s quickly established itself as one of the most popular games of 2024. If you’ve yet to pick it up, your patience has finally paid off, because the game is now available at a 30% discount for Black Friday, bringing it down to its lowest price yet.
For those of you who are only vaguely familiar with it, Helldivers 2 is a co-op game that sees you and a squad of other players heading down into different alien battlefields to eviscerate as many Insectoids as possible or to carry out other missions that all help feed into the overall war effort. The variety of Helldivers 2 weapons means that there are lots of ways for you to approach each battle (and trust me, there are loads of them to use and unlock) allowing you to hone your own unique playstyle. Different enemies require different techniques though, so you’ve got to be adaptable.
The variety doesn’t just come from the combat though – levels vary quite significantly. Sometimes you’re at war in snowy mountain ranges, other times you’re making your way through lush forests or arid desert regions. There’s a lot to keep this game fresh and interesting – and of course, the matchmaking system means you never know who you’re going to be fighting alongside (unless you specifically want to team up with friends).
Crucially, unlike the 1997 Starship Troopers adaptation, Helldivers 2 does not miss the point of the book that inspired it. It’s very clear that your gung-ho squads are not the shining heroes their propaganda leads them to believe they are, and the level of satire here is often pretty darn hilarious. This even comes through in small details like the fact that when you die, you don’t respawn, you take control of a different Helldiver who’s been sent down to the surface.
With a better price than you’ll find in the Steam Autumn Sale, Fanatical currently has Helldivers 2 at $27.99 / £24.49 or $41.99 / £34.99 for the Super Citizen edition of the game, which includes extra outfits and weapons for your Helldivers.
