Season 2 for HBO’s The Last Of Us will be 7 episodes long, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have confirmed. Two episodes less than what we got with season one, but it seems like Mazin and Druckmann believe it’ll better serve the story of The Last Of Us Part II over multiple seasons.“The story material that we got from Part II of the game is way more than the story material that was in the first game, so part of what we had to do from the start was figure out how to tell that story across seasons,” Mazin told Deadline in a new interview.“When you do that, you look for natural breakpoints, and as we laid it out, this season, the natural breakpoint felt like it came after seven episodes.”It’s old news that Mazin and Druckmann agreed it would be impossible to repeat what they did with the first game in the series and adapt the story into one single season. There’s no guarantee though that they’ll get those extra seasons to tell the story as completely as they may want to. Until HBO signs on for up to four seasons, the pacing of the story is up in the air.Across these initial seven episodes for Season 2, Mazin confirms we’ll have at least one episode that is particularly long. So perhaps if HBO deny the request to get the story told in four seasons, the third and then final season will be a bunch of very long episodes to make up for it.Mazin however sounds confident something like that won’t be the show’s future.”We feel like it’s almost assuredly going to be the case that — as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television — Season 3 will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require Season 4.”Before the end of the interview Mazin doubled-down, saying “One thing is absolutely for sure, I don’t see how we could tell the story that remains after Season 2 is complete in one more season.”Even with all this talk of potentially needing four seasons, Mazin reiterates that he in no way intends to try and invent a new story for The Last Of Us, for now the show will only cover material already in the games. However that puts into question what will happen when/if a third game is revealed. There’s been hints from Druckmann that it’s happening, or that Naughty Dog is at least circling the idea of doing a third game, if they’re not already working on it.Which means we could get a future where this HBO adaptation finishes with The Last Of Us Part 2 after four seasons, and by that time The Last Of Us Part 3 has rolled around, and immediately work begins to adapt it for a fifth and potentially a sixth season. We’ll just have to see how that turns out. For now, we can look forward to Season 2, which is set to arrive in 2025.Source – [Deadline]
