HBO chief Casey Bloys has announced during a press conference that production on The Last of Us Season 2 is expected to kick off in early 2024.Production on HBO’s post-apocalyptic series was delayed due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes earlier this year, and seeing as how The Last of Us was not mentioned in the 2024 sale presentation, it’s likely the sophomore season won’t premiere until 2025. The Last of Us Season 1 aired earlier this year on HBO and was a huge success, with a report back in May revealing the show averaged around 32 million viewers per episode. The show was renewed for a second season before the first season finished airing all its episodes. As such, we can expect the events of The Last of Us Part 2 to be told over more than one season, as there’s more story to tell compared to the original game.Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Mazin revealed:We were able to map out all of Season 2. And I also wrote and submitted the script for the first episode and sent it in [to HBO] around 10:30 or 10:40 p.m. right before the midnight the [WGA] strike began. I think it’s becoming essentially a near certainty that we won’t be able to start [filming] when we were hoping to start, which is upsetting. We are all raring to go.[Source – Variety]
