Red Dead Redemption 2 may never have got its Undead Nightmare equivalent, but you can enjoy a magnificent dose of horror-tinged Wild West action right now courtesy of indie developer Hyperstrange and publisher New Blood Interactive. Blood West, the Lovecraft cowboy FPS that brings together the best of RDR 2, Stalker, and immersive sims such as Thief, has a brand-new DLC that puts a witchy twist on its already fantastic gameplay and story. It’s out now, and you can even grab both the base game and its expansion at a discount if you’re fast.

Blood West is a masterful, immersive-sim tinged blend of boomer shooter style FPS game and open-world RPG. As an undead gunslinger attempting to free their soul, you’ll meet all manner of weird and wonderful characters as you explore its haunting Barren Lands – and come into conflict with plenty of twisted spirits and nightmarish dark entities.

Pulling from the books of Lovecraft and Wild West legend alike, it’s a mix of exploration and secrets, intense combat featuring a mammoth collection of weapons, and rewarding character progression allowing you to slip into the shadows or wade in swinging and shooting as you please. Whether you’re lamenting the lack of a new Deus Ex or want to discover more open worlds in the vein of Stalker 2, Blood West is well worth a look.

Having earned itself a 90% Steam user rating so far, Hyperstrange has just launched new Blood West DLC Dead Man’s Promise. “A promise made and a deal struck, your soul signed as collateral in your debt to the God of Death. Now your benefactor seeks to claim his due and sends his messenger to make sure you make good on your word.” This new story chapter will see you travel to “a familiar place at an unfamiliar time,” making it a perfect complement to the main game’s narrative.

Further enhancing the options at your disposal is a new set of witchcraft-themed skills, weapons, and tools. Find magical staves capable of melting through the horrors that lurk in the darkness, summon minions to aid you, or curse your foes to inflict deadly debuffs. Or, if you’re steadfastly traditional, pick up one of the many new guns and blast your way through the hordes. Just be warned; some of these unknowable creatures aren’t just a threat to your physical well-being, but to your very mind itself.

Supplementing this is an all-new skill tree filled with more perks to play with. Perhaps you’ll become a puppet master and lean into building your own crew of creepy companions. Or maybe you’re an adventurous eater, chowing down on even the most unpleasant of snacks to fill your stomach and your soul. Suffice it to say, if you loved Blood West, you’ll probably want to check out Dead Man’s Promise – and if you haven’t played it, a Steam sale makes now the perfect time to get both the base game and its new DLC at a discount.

Blood West: Dead Man's Promise - A witch in a top hat raises her hands as she closes her eyes in thought.
