Gambling fiends don’t have to pay a visit to Vegas to get their next fix – Sokpop Collective’s new hamster betting sim (yes, really) Hamster All-Stars is here. Part builder and part odds dealing, should players hit the checkered track?
Hamster All-Stars Review
Before players can get in on the action, they first need to build a track for these little fuzzy creatures. In order to get things going, players must make use of objects like ramps, posts, and tubes to set things up. The interface is fairly intuitive, with players dropping items in with the left mouse button, removing them with the right, and using the scroll functionality to zoom. It doesn’t feel limited in the slightest, and creating the perfect arena can be done without too much trouble with its small yet mighty arsenal.
Things get that much better when it comes to testing each track out. With a press of the space button, a little hamster starts to make its way to the coveted cup at the end of each track. It can be downright addicting seeing if some over-the-top creation will pay off or launch your hamster into the ether. There are times where the objects are poorly positioned, but it is easy to right this wrong and get things back into shape.
Once things are built to your liking, the betting action of Hamster All-Stars begins. It’s a battle between the red team and the blue team, with a differing amount of hamsters representing each side. Of course, differing teams have differing odds, and it’s up to players to put their money where their mouth is and choose the right side. Players can also choose to bet larger sums of money, though even a single coin can bring back a great ROI.
However, players will not have to sit idly by while the hamsters scurry along. With a simple click, one of the hamsters can be nudged along. This proves to be a bit too overpowered for its own good, and we were able to win a number of races with this simple strategy. This lack of balance can make the game feel rigged, but when it’s you against the computer, it’s more likely a case of this being a casual good time than a serious affair. Besides, almost anybody can agree that it’s better to be rich than poor.
With your hard-earned winnings, players can unlock additional pieces to make the perfect course. None are too expensive, and we were able to unlock the full suite of options in less than an hour. There’s also a number of achievements for collecting wealth and having races drag out for more than five minutes, but players can 100% this title before too long.
Hamster All-Stars is pure, unadulterated goofiness. While the racing aspect is rigged, one cannot deny the allure of building the perfect racetrack for your little furry friends.
