Hades-style Callisto Protocol roguelike is free to keep if you’re fast enough

If you’re a fan of sci-fi horror, roguelikes or both, Redacted needs to be on your radar and, thanks to today’s Epic Games Store giveaway, you can get it absolutely free. But you’ll need to be fast; you’ve got less than a day to claim it, after which it’ll be replaced by another free game.

Remember Redacted? We wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t, since the circumstances surrounding the release of this roguelike game are a little odd. It was released this October but, despite being set in The Callisto Protocol universe, it just had that one-word title.

“It was just such a tonal shift that we wanted to make it its own thing and not try to tie back—because it’s a pretty big jump from The Callisto Protocol to what we have in [REDACTED]”, Ben Walker, creative director on the game explains.

It may also have had something to do with the fact that The Callisto Protocol, a sci-fi survival horror from some of the minds behind the original Dead Space, wasn’t that well received. In fact, while Redacted is rated Very Positive on Steam, The Callisto Protocol sits at a meager Mixed.

Your mission, as a guard trapped in the monster-filled Black Iron Prison space penitentiary, is to blast your way through hordes of monsters and escape in one piece. And if not, there’s another guard, and another and another. That’s a lot of potential corpses, but you’re bound to get there eventually.

There’s plenty of fun to be had, thanks to Redacted’s innovative features, including the Rivals system. Forget just creeping forward with your badass build, you’re not the only one after that one escape pod.

Redacted is a must-have if you’re a fan of sci-fi, roguelikes or both, regardless of whether you’ve played The Callisto Protocol. You can claim it now on the Epic Games Store, but you’ve only got until 8am PT / 4pm GMT December 31.
