Of the many action roguelikes that have followed in the wake of the mighty Hades, Sworn has been a real personal favorite. Launched into early access in February, the co-op game allows up to four of you to fight through the lands of Camelot and attempt to save the kingdom from a fallen, corrupted King Arthur. But it turns out the rot doesn’t stop with the ruler. New Sworn update The Mutinous Fae is now live, and drags you on a quest to uncover the source of the corruption itself.
Sworn takes the core structure of the best roguelikes such as Hades and wraps a fantastic amount of build variety around those bones with a full roster of playable characters, each with numerous combinations of weapons and spells at their disposal. The introduction of up to four-person multiplayer also makes it one of the few co-op games in the mold, and the Arthurian legends and the associated Fae Lords it pulls from make an excellent setting for the action.
The climax of each run sees you fighting through the elite forces occupying the castle of Camelot’s halls to take on King Arthur himself. That’s all changed now, however. Beyond the fall of the once-great monarch lie more secrets to be discovered. The corruption continues to spread in the wake of the king’s demise, and you and your friends must call on a new ally to help you free the realm from its effects.
This newcomer will appear in Carmarthen after you have successfully defeated Arthur, and will open the door to a new challenge quest that unlocks access to the final region. This secret biome features eight combat chambers, a shop, and a fountain room, and is filled with some of Sworn’s biggest threats yet. There are more traps to contend with, and five minor foes, one major foe, and a new final boss complete with accompanying cutscenes all await, complete with new music to bring them to life.
Elsewhere, new enhancements can be unlocked with Guinevere. Once activated, the Altar of Sacrifice will allow you to give up the blessings you’ve acquired during a run for alternative rewards. The Altar of Exchange lets allied players trade blessings if you think your builds might look better with a little shuffling about. The Trial of Corruption gives you the opportunity to accept additional corruptions, with bonus rewards up for grabs if you prove worthy.
Sworn update The Mutinous Fae is out now. You’ll also spot new art and animation, some improved UI assets, and fixes for a few misbehaving Fae blessings. Read through the full patch notes courtesy of developer Windwalk Games for the full details.
