Sometimes all you want to do is put on a suit of armor and wander around with big sword. It’s why LARPing is such fun! Sadly, actual armor and actual swords are relatively hard to acquire, and using them to their fullest extent is tricky. But that’s why we have Kingdom Come: Deliverance, an excellent historical action RPG that’s free to own right now – but you’ll want to be quick.
Forget dragons and sorcery, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is an RPG that places you in the middle of the Roman Empire in the early 1400s. Hungary is invading Bohemia, and you play Henry, the child of a village ransacked on the orders of King Sigismund who grows up to become a prominent resistance fighter.
You guide Henry on his mission to get one-on-one with Sigismund, navigating the tense political landscape, engaging in all manner of questlines, and exploring the Kingdom of Bohemia, centuries before it would become the Czech Republic. The action game has a Witcher-esque structure, but firmly embedded in historical accuracy rather than outright lore.
It came out in 2018, and has been a standard-bearer for role-playing with more of a simulation game quality to it. You can specialize in all manner of weapons from close to long range, and tackle situations through diplomacy, manipulation, or violence. It’s very much like an in-depth, robust LARP with particular geography and political relations.
It’s so good, Warhorse Studios is making another. Sadly, the Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 release date has been delayed into February 2025. But now you can play the original for the low, low price of absolutely nothing.
