Golf In Michigan On New Year’s Day: The Streak At 119

Looking at the long-range forecast, I decided that New Year’s Day would be as good an opportunity as I would have over the next week to play golf.

Snow had fallen overnight, but the cover had melted away by late morning; by early afternoon, the mercury was up to 36 degrees. I packed a Sunday bag and headed to the course (It is not only metaphorically, but also literally a Sunday bag. You can see it on Amazon at the link.)

Conditions were as good as could be expected. No standing water. No ice. No snow. The ground was damp in some places, but curiously not as wet as it was when I played on December 30.

I was prepared for the wet, though, having dug up my old pair of Oregon Mudders golf shoes (Amazon link). They’re entirely waterproof and have some fuzzy insulation on the inside. Ultimately, they’re not the most comfortable things to have on your feet, being somewhat stiff, but at least they’re dry.

The round also gave me the opportunity to try out a new pair of sunglasses from Sport Rx. With their transitions lenses, they were perfect for the light conditions, which varied from bright and hazy to gloomy and hazy.

The clarity on these is amazing.

I had fun on the round, even if — as expected — I did not play particularly well. With all of the layers of clothing, it is more difficult for me to properly turn back and through, or to approach any semblance of fluidity.

Playing with a Sunday bag actually makes my winter golf experiences more interesting. My goal is not to score well, but to figure out different ways to use the five clubs in the bag: driver, 3 hybrid, 7 iron, wedge, putter.

Winter golf is an exercise in imagination and patience.

I did manage to get through it with just one ball. It helps that it was red.

My round in January (hopefully I have several more) marked the 119th month of The Streak, in which I have played at least one round in Michigan.
