Golf In Michigan In Late December 2024

I got out for a round of golf at Washtenaw Golf Club on Monday, December 30. Temperatures were in the mid 40s, and the sun was out, so it was a trousers-and-sweater kind of day.

Southeast Michigan experienced torrential rains the day before, so I was worried about standing water on the course. This time of year, when the underlying ground is frozen, there just isn’t anywhere for surface water to go.

Fortunately, it was not as bad as I feared. In places, footsteps summoned a rush of water from below, but I left the course after eighteen holes with my feet dry. There was little roll in the ball, of course, but no one plays this time of year with the intention of setting course or personal records. It is just all about being out in our favorite place.

And there were a LOT of golfers out in their favorite place yesterday. I arrived at 2 pm at the tail end of what looked to be a pretty busy day at Washtenaw. No carts, of course, but everyone was moving quickly on foot.

Walking really is the best way to play in cooler weather. Movement keeps the muscles warm; riding, they will grow stiff, and the breeze created by the cart will chill.

Sunset this time of year in Michigan is just after 5 p.m., so the shadows already were long by the time I teed off. It is a pretty time of the day, regardless of the season. There’s a reason photographers call it “the golden hour.”

I had a great time on my final round of 2024. I am very much looking forward to golf in 2025.
