The Global Esports Federation (GEF) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the UN Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs) during the SDG Digital Summit 2024.

Organised by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the SDG Digital Summit focused on key global commitments to enhance the SDGs through digital innovation.

The event took place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on September 20th-21st, with more than $1.05b (~£785m) in total pledges announced. The UN’s 17 SDGs represent the cornerstones of a sustainable, fair and safe future for everyone, such as quality education, gender equality and zero poverty.

As a participant of SDG Digital, GEF joined the commitment to initiatives for digital skills development, greater inclusion, connectivity and youth empowerment in its #Elevate2030Program. The federation also made significant pledges as part of the ITU’s Partner2Connect Digital Coalition.

Moreover, GEF is a member of the SDG Digital Advisory Group, which aims to address global challenges through digital technology. The initiative was convened by ITU Secretary-General, Doreen Bogdan-Martin, working alongside UN system organisations and prominent international organisations, such as Amazon, Google and Microsoft.

At SDG Digital, GEF CEO Paul J. Foster was invited by UN Secretary-General António Guterres to join a discussion on ‘A Digital Future for All, The Hope of the Digital’. During the conversation, Foster emphasised esports’ unique position to engage connected people globally as well as those who remain disconnected. Foster stated: “Esports is not just about gaming; it’s a global connector, empowering youth, and a force for driving innovation.”

In addition, Foster presented the Pioneers Youth Award at the event’s SDG Digital GameChangers Awards.

GEF’s mission is to promote the credibility, legitimacy and prestige of esports worldwide. With its world headquarters in Singapore and additional strategic hubs globally, the federation has established more than 175 international partnerships and Member Federations. In collaboration with its strategic partners, GEF is engaging in a series of Global Social Impact Initiatives (GSII) focused on social impact.

This year, the organisation secured partnerships with MGM Alternative, the International World Games Association, Asociación Deportiva Peruana de Esports (ADPES) and metaverse company Infinite Reality.
