If you’re looking for a fast and fun new game on your smartphone we think we’ve found just what you’re looking for – with Getaway from developer Wildlife Control offering arcade thrills on both Android and iOS.
Describing itself as a combo of Air Hockey and Pong, it offers you the chance to play solo or compete with a friend in tense tennis style contests. If you let the ball get past your opponent’s bat, you gain a point. First to a set number of points (3, 5, or 7) wins.
So it’s Air Hockey then?
Basically yes, but boasting swish neon visuals and a consistent 60fps. What we found Getaway offers primarily is a fast and fun experience – with no drawbacks.
Is it a deep experience? No. But it doesn’t intend to be. We had a blast because it pulls off what it aims to perfectly.
Even playing solo is fun thanks to the smart AI, which means we get a stiff challenge every time we play a quick match.
We could never blame the controls on any loss either, with the touchscreen based action never feeling fiddly or unresponsive. Issues we’ve seen similar titles fall foul of in the past.
Presentation is Everything
As mentioned this is a title that nails its presentation too. There’s an engaging space theme to everything and a range of dynamic tables with accurate NASA & Hubble imagery.
The music is also retro inspired, with sound effects also meaning every whack of the ball feels great – especially with the haptic feedback you get on every shot.
Then there are the extensive multiplayer options. You can play a friend on the same device, and then there’s also the chance to compete with a pal online. There’s even the option to invite people to play you via text too.
Solo and same device multiplayer modes both work fully offline as well.
Basically Getaway is one of our favourite games on mobile so far this year, offering a fast and fun take on virtual air hockey. Best yet, it’s just $2,99 with no ads or in-app purchases – and it’s available on Google Play and the App Store right now.
