The Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora team discusses how they utilise the Snowdrop engine to “bring the alluring world of Pandora to life” with a tech showcase video. Check it out below. The footage comes from the reveal trailer we saw during Ubisoft Forward, but it’s interspersed with new commentary from the dev team. “As the world of Avatar is so different from anything we’ve done before, we had to do some major upgrades and big improvements to our engine,” says technical art director Sebastian Lindoff. “In the past, Snowdrop allowed us to build amazing cities, but to capture the natural beauty of Pandora, we needed to push Snowdrop even further. We have created a Pandora that you can experience from the deep dense jungles on the ground to the grand vistas high up in the skies.”The dev team explains how the Snowdrop engine allows them to create “interactive shaders” to “add more life to the vegetation of Pandora,” which the player will see reflected in “real-time wind simulations and interactions,” as well as “intelligent plants reacting to your presence” — such as the plant we see recoiling from the player-character in the video above. Since we’ll also be flying around Pandora, the devs also implemented a new “volumetric cloud system” with Snowdrop to improve how things will look in the skies. All in all, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora sounds as though it’s shaping up to be a pretty amazing visual experience. What do you think of what we’ve seen so far? Which bit are you most looking forward to? Let us know in the comments!
