Fortnite: DreamHack Changes Trio Cash Cup Extra Qualification

DreamHack has made a crucial change to the Cash Cup Extra qualification process.

DreamHack’s Cash Cup Extra has been a staple in competitive Fortnite over the last few seasons. The competition single-handedly made Trio Cash Cups more interesting, mainly because only the top-132 teams in Europe and NA East would qualify for the Cash Cup Extra. Trios had to put forth a modest effort to have a shot at the over $30K USD that DreamHack had to offer.

Despite its positives, the Cash Cup Extra drew criticism from the community. Players complained about the lack of set lobbies and a scoring system that favored eliminations heavily. In true DreamHack fashion, the organizers fielded the complaints and subsequently announced a crucial change to the Cash Cup Extra’s qualification process.

Starting November 4, only the top 33 teams will secure themselves a spot in the Cash Cup Extra. While the scoring system and prize pool remain the same, this simple change should make the Cash Cup Extra much more competitive than in previous instances.

DreamHack Reduces Cash Cup Extra Qualification from Top 132 to Top 33

With the FNCS Season 8 Finals looming, DreamHack executed a crucial change to the Cash Cup Extra qualification process. Since its inception, the Cash Cup Extra qualification required a top-132 placement in the weekly Trio Cash Cup. That has now changed to only the top 33 teams from each Trio Cash Cup earning the right to compete in the Cash Cup Extra.

This adjustment, of course, means that we will see set lobbies in the Cash Cup Extra instead of the usual open format. In general, DreamHack’s trio tournament should be more competitive with perhaps less w-keying. That last point remains to be seen since the scoring system still awards six points per elimination. Regardless, it’ll be worth watching the next round of Cash Cup Extra competitions to see how much of a difference the change to the top 33 qualification makes.
