When you think of the best classic PC games, point-and-click adventures are always going to be high on the list. LucasArts brought us Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle. Revolution had Broken Sword, and Sierra delivered King’s Quest. But Amerzone is one of those delightful curiosities you might have forgotten, yet stands alongside games like Myst as a true relic of the era, one that floods your brain with nostalgia at a mere mention. Whether you experienced it at the time, or it remains a complete unknown to you, the 1999 original can be yours completely for free right now, as developer Microids prepares a full remake.
Amerzone: The Explorer’s Legacy comes from the mind of Belgian comic book artist Benoît Sokal, and follows a young journalist sent on an expedition to the titular country, a fictional South American region, in search of the last egg of a mythical species known as the Great White Birds. Plunged into a landscape of fantastical flora and deadly fauna, it has all the trappings of classic adventure games such as Myst but with a more direct, involved story that tugs on those same strands of exploration as the likes of Uncharted.
What initially feels like a fairly grounded adventure quickly spirals into the weird and wonderful, embracing bizarre and compelling fictional twists on real-life creatures and vegetation. The result proved a success, selling more than a million copies, and the universe crafted for Amerzone would go on to appear in Sokal’s Syberia games.
This treasure from the annals of PC gaming history has recently been dusted off – in just one month, Microids is set to launch a full Amerzone remake that brings it into full 2025 high definition. But if that news has left you curious about the original, you now have the chance to try it without spending a thing, as it’s available as a free Steam game for a limited time.
You can claim the original Amerzone: The Explorer’s Legacy completely free on Steam until Monday March 24 at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 5pm GMT / 6pm CET. You don’t have long, so head here to secure a copy while you can.
