Square Enix has detailed why Final Fantasy 16 is a PS5 console exclusive, revealing that Sony simply made the best offer.Final Fantasy 16 was announced back in 2020 as a PS5 console exclusive with the old “not available on other platforms for a limited time after PS5” disclaimer that Xbox fans are pretty used to seeing these days. Now, Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida has revealed the reason behind the game’s PS5 exclusivity. Final Fantasy 16 isn’t on Xbox because Sony made the best offerSpeaking with Game Informer, Yoshida said that the FFXVI team “looked at all options” once they began development on the game and approached multiple companies and platforms about releasing the game. “Final Fantasy, being one of Square Enix’s very important franchises up there with Dragon Quest and the Kingdom Hearts series – when we do begin development, we do approach multiple platforms, multiple companies, about releasing the game,” Yoshida said, “And when you approach them, they’re going to come back to us with their offers.”It’s now apparent that Sony’s offer was more attractive than whatever Microsoft and other platforms had brought to the table. It’s also worth noting that Sony and Square Enix also have a long-standing relationship that has resulted in numerous PlayStation-exclusive games so that probably played a part too. For all the Xbox Final Fantasy fans out there, it’s still unclear if Final Fantasy 16 will ever make it onto Xbox. FFXVI is a PS5 console exclusive for a limited time, which means it will likely be coming to PC at some point in the future, but whether or not that means it’s coming to Xbox in the future remains unclear. Of course, Final Fantasy 7 Remake was originally released as a ‘timed exclusive’ for PS4 back in 2019, but that still hasn’t come across to Xbox and probably never will at this stage.
