Today, Square Enix provided an outline of the financial results breifing that it held back in May 2024, in which it reported a loss of ¥8.1 billion in the HD games segment. The company didn’t mince any words, and told stakeholders that Final Fantasy 16 and FF7 Rebirth profits “unfortunately did not meet our expectations.”
Square Enix has garnered a reputation for declaring that its games have underperformed, but Niko Partners’ Daniel Ahmad points out that this is one of those rare occasions where the company isn’t being unreasonable. “Both games really did underperform compared to past entries,” he tweeted.
Players are debating whether PS5 exclusivity is to blame or not. PS4 exclusivity worked for FF7 Remake because of the console’s install base at the time of its release. However, some have pointed out that FF16’s Steam launch saw an underwhelming response from PC players, and blamed franchise fatigue and its lack of appeal for a younger audience.
