Fighting the New World: Your first steps into PvP

If you’ve been playing Amazon Games’ New World since it launched earlier this week, you’ll no doubt by now have levelled up some skills, crafted yourself some better armour, and happily worked your way through some of the opening quests as you got your bearings around Aeternum. But there is so much more out there waiting for you.

You can, of course, continue on your journey alone, uncovering the secrets of the Ancients and taking down the Lost and Corrupted that get in your way. But if you really want to make your mark on Aeternum, then you might consider joining a faction and entering the world of PvP.

Fighting other players is a whole different kettle of fish to fighting the shambling reanimated corpses of sailors, of course. So here are a few tips to get you started on your PvP journey in New World.

Making friends (and enemies)

Early into your journey through Aeternum, you’ll be invited to join one of three factions. These factions are the starting point for all PvP in New World, so if you’re itching to fight other players, you’ll need to sign up with one as soon as you can.

No matter whether you side with the Covenant, Syndicate, or Marauders, signing up to a faction unlocks a new set of quests to help them gain standing and power across Aeternum. Some of these can be completed without needing to actively fight other players, but others will require you to leave yourself open to being attacked by members of another faction in the world, so be careful which you choose.

Once you’ve picked your faction, you can head out into the open world and start fighting with other players as you please. Make sure PvP is turned on by pressing ‘U’ in a major settlement, run outside of its borders, wait for the 30-second cooldown to end, and you’re good to go. You can only engage in an unplanned fight with other players from rival factions with PvP turned on, so don’t worry about getting into scrapes with people who aren’t looking for a fight.

If you’re also looking to avoid a battle, you’re in luck. If you’re in a safe area, PvP combat will be turned off automatically, giving you some respite as you craft gear and sell items at a Trading Post. You can also turn off PvP for the wider world when in a settlement, so no matter what you’re up to, you can be safe in the knowledge that you won’t be picked off by a rival faction halfway through a quest.

Wandering around with PvP turned on can be pretty dangerous, as you don’t know where your next challenger will appear from – be sure to carry plenty of healing items and keep your best equipment to hand if you’re planning on engaging in some faction-battling!

And if you do fancy a scrap but don’t want to risk losing gear, you can always start a duel with another player. There’s no faction restrictions, and you can start a duel anywhere outside of a settlement without any consequences for losing – it’s your opportunity to let off some steam and try out your newest weapon on another player.

Going big

If one-on-one scraps in the woods aren’t enough for you, then you might be interested in a spot of all-out War. Having a faction or company declare war on an opposing faction or company in a territory leads to a huge, 50v50 battle in that territory’s Fort. This is where you’ll really need to prove your mettle in chaotic PvP brawls where the results can have serious effects to those in the area. Having your faction in charge leads to helpful buffs and improvements in those regions, along with control over territory tax rates, so it’s in your best interest to help out when you can.

For those who have reached level 60 and learned almost everything they can about Aeternum, there’s still ridiculous battles to be had in Outpost Rush. These 20v20 matches pit rival factions against each other in a race to capture objectives and defeat foes, with the aim of earning a certain number of points before the opposing team. It’s fast, frantic, and filled with plenty of objectives to take care of beyond mashing other players in the face with a sword, so you should definitely look forward to unlocking it.

PvP is a great way to make the incredible stories of New World even more exciting by throwing in massive battles and tricky encounters when you least expect them. So don’t be afraid to turn it on every once in a while. And if you haven’t already, be sure to pick up your copy of New World today, on Steam or directly from Amazon.
