Elden Ring patch 1.04 buffs Strength builds, dozens of spells, and more

Those still working through the Elden Ring achievements can expect to see quite a few changes after the latest update, v1.04, which brings improvements to Colossal weapons and a host of spells, plus many more tweaks. You can get the complete rundown with the full patch notes for today’s update, so we’ll just break down some of the main changes here. One of the bigger adjustments is the suite of improvements to Colossal weapons, the gigantic tools of choice for Strength builds — attack speed is increased, two-handed damage and guarding improved, and recovery times reduced, hopefully making these mighty weapons finally feel as strong as they should. Jump attacks are unaffected by these changes, but in fairness, they were already the weapon type’s main strength anyway. FromSoftware has also made it so that Stamina and FP gauges are quicker to grow at early levels, giving you more resources with which to work. This change will affect all new characters normally and be applied retroactively to existing ones the first time you do anything that alters your base stats (such as levelling up or equipping something that buffs a stat) to force a one-time recalculation. As for magic and Weapon Skills, buffs massively outweigh nerfs — we see well over 100 abilities benefit from the former and just three suffer the latter as From attempts to pull many other abilities up rather than quashing the most popular picks, which should open up a much broader range of builds and play styles that feel powerful. This slew of enhancements is joined by myriad bug fixes, including making Carian Retaliation work as intended (revenge projectiles were previously absurdly powerful under certain conditions… as well as being invisible in PvP) and a few new additions, like a camera auto-rotate toggle in the menu and extra “event phases” for Patches. Uh oh…Still battling your way through the Lands Between? Pleased to see any of these changes in particular? Let us know!
