Elden Ring creator wants players to feel “the joy that comes from overcoming hardship”

Players have at last been unleashed to chase those Elden Ring achievements — which currently sit with an intimidating maximum TrueAchievements score of 33,814 — after the game released to rave reviews last week. In a recent interview, creator Hidetaka Miyazaki said that what he wants with the game is for players to “experience the joy that comes from overcoming hardship.”Speaking to The New Yorker, Miyazaki says, “I do feel apologetic toward anyone who feels there’s just too much to overcome in my games… I just want as many players as possible to experience the joy that comes from overcoming hardship.” In fact, Miyazaki previously commented that he thinks more players will finish Elden Ring, adding, “As I mentioned, the player’s level of freedom to progress through the world or return to a challenge later are all elements that I feel will help people get through the game at a more leisurely pace. Also, there isn’t a focus on pure action… The player has more agency to dictate their approach against, for example, the field bosses in the overworld and how they utilize stealth in various situations. We’ve even reduced the number of hoops that you have to jump through to enjoy it in multiplayer,” Miyazaki continues. “So we hope the players embrace that idea of receiving help from others. And we feel like the overall clear rate will go up this time because of these things.”We have over 24,000 Elden Ring players here on TA, and it’s unsurprising that nobody has yet finished it, given how much there is for players to sink their teeth into. According to FromSoftware’s Yasuhiro Kitao, just the “main route” alone will take 30 hours to beat, although Kitao continued to add that “the game as a whole is quite massive and contains many dozens more hours’ worth of gameplay”.
