Dune: Awakening isn’t out yet – in fact even when it does launch, it won’t be available on consoles for some time – but it is in closed beta for those lucky and keen enough to arrive on Arrakis as soon as possible. So even though there’s still so many unanswered questions about the game, and so much being tooled and re-tooled in its beta period, we do have some metrics that indicate a key point about the gameplay.According to a blog post from developer Funcom to close out 2024, the death metrics for those in the closed beta show that Funcom has really nailed down the reality of a planet like Arrakis, and that reality is that everything around you is trying to kill you.Firstly, everyone has to survive for themselves on Arrakis, and that shows with 58% of player deaths coming from NPC’s on the planet. Secondly, and unsurprisingly, it’s the sandworms who are taking a chunk of players out with 27% of player deaths being Shai-Hulud sacrifices. And thirdly, it’s the dehydration that’s taking another 22%, a death that players have even tried to avoid by draining the blood of the desert mouse which Paul Atreides names himself after, Muad’dib. According to the post, nearly “a hundred muad’dibs had their blood extracted,” to which Funcom said, “How could you?”Lastly, it’s also clear that if you really lean into surviving on Arrakis, it’s possible to stay alive, as “2% of players who have played at least 10 hours have never died in the game…yet!”All of that together spells the fact that Funcom has got Arrakis right. Players are dying from the planets deadly atmosphere and the survivalist culture it breeds, and they’re going to extreme lengths to try and stay alive. An achievable, but difficult feat.Of course this game is still in beta, and it’ll likely change quite a bit from now until its launch on PS5 and PS5 Pro, but hopefully the lethality of Arrakis stays intact. If you can’t wait for the console launch, you can put yourself forward for the beta with this beta profile survey on the Dune: Awakening website.Source – [Funcom via PC Gamer]
