If you spent far too much time last year in the Balatro hole, Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers is a fellow card game-based roguelike you don’t want to miss. Even though the indie deckbuilder was playable before LocalThunk’s opus, its affectionate description as ‘Blackjack Balatro’ is about as succinct as it gets. Since launch, the team at Purple Moss Collectors has been hard at work improving the experience, and the latest update makes a suite of changes. Best of all, you can snag the game at a sizable discount on Valve’s platform right now.
Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers pits you against a foe in a twisted version of Blackjack. Just like the real game, you and your opponent are both trying to draw from a deck of cards and get your total value as close to 21 without going over – the problem is, it was never going to be quite that simple.
For starters, each of the four suits in the deck gives you a different buff. Hearts heal you, spades offer protection, diamonds give you currency, and clubs deal out extra damage. It’s not just Aces and Kings in that deck, however, as almost anything can be added to your pile to help you come out on top. Credit cards, tarot cards, IDs, memory cards, and a whole lot more are eventually at your disposal in the roguelike. Just like Balatro, Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers takes a game you know and turns it into one you don’t.
Now, update 1.3 is here to shake things up even further. The ID card customization options and UI have been completely overhauled, giving you new faces, designs, and an easier time navigating it all. There’s also a whole host of new art for things like the Runaway Cart and Dungeon Counterfeiter events, slot machine, and eight-card and four-card shops. The visuals have been given a nice new coat of paint where they were needed most.
Plenty of the card game’s sound effects have also been updated, with some completely new ones added. Myriad card abilities have been adjusted, alongside some enemy changes to make sure Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers plays as fairly as possible. You can even expect better controller support, if you’d rather not play on a mouse and keyboard. DnDG has been improved across the board in these patch notes, so now’s the time to dive in.
